Another question...

So, we all know Miss Havisham is a terrible, depressed, heartbroken person. But what would make her pretend to be Pip's benefactor? It is a cruel, cruel thing to do to Pip. Pip's whole life was based on hopes of winning over Estella, and she alluded to his being intended for her, but when the time comes and he knows the truth she admits to the whole shenanigans(360). Please help me understand!!!!!!!!!!!

  1. I was under the impression that Miss Havisham was trying to make her relatives--the Pockets, (who want her money) unhappy by making THEM think she was giving her money to Pip rather than them.
    Sorry, that was rather rambling.

  2. What I heard from Mrs. Gilman I think was that Miss Havisham hates her greedy relatives (the Pockets) and by pretending she was giving her enourmous fortune to Pip, she was spiting them in her own way. She knew the only reason her relatives stuck around was because they wanted her money, so she sort of took revenge. Does seem kinda mean to Pip though haha
